Police chase

COPS in LA, next on Fox! I sure am glad I always carry my digital camera in my car.

The Story

We were driving up the 5, on our way to Ikea from the huge fabric outlet in City of Commerce. We were nearing the interchange to the 2 when we noticed a police car in front of us flashing its lights and weaving violently. He began weaving between all four lanes in an attempt to slow down traffic. We were in the front line of traffic, and doing about 40 behind the cop. Suddenly, we notice this burgundy Lincoln Town Car trying to squeeze ahead of us by driving between us and the car in the next lane. We’re already saying, “What the fuck?” as he cuts in front of us and speeds ahead, trying to pass the cop.

Police Chase

The cop attempts to slow him down by driving in front of him and motioning for him to stop. Eventually, the Town Car stops and the cops get out and walk over to his vehicle, where I hear some yelling. I think the guy had a Pomeranian or something, which was yapping in the back seat.

Police Chase

The cops then returned to their car and continued their attempts to slow traffic, and the guy tries to pull ahead of them once again! The cop stops him again and speaks to him. The cops then return to their car and bring their car to the back of the Town Car, where the cop announces over his loudspeaker, “Move, or you will be pushed off the freeway!” The Town Car begins to move again, and the cop turns on his lights and sirens and follows him. What followed was no less than a low speed pursuit for several miles.

Police Chase

Next on the scene was the Channel 9 News helicopter, followed by two more police cars about a mile after the 134 interchange. At Burbank Blvd, he pulled over to the right. The cops got out of their vehicles, stood behind their doors, and pointed their shotguns at the Town Car. Here’s where we became a little worried about stray bullets and such, since we were in the front line of the civilian traffic. We were probably about 20 feet from the police cars. Several more police cars rushed to the scene, making about ten in all, along with about 3 or 4 news and police helicopters.

Police Chase

After a couple minutes of this standoff, the Town Car takes off again at a low speed, and the police rush back to their cars to follow him. A few miles later, at Glenoaks, he stops again and there is another shotgun standoff, this time at a safe distance ahead of us.

Police Chase

Once again, he decides to take off. There are now about 5 helicopters, and about 20 cops blocking all the on ramps. A portly motorcycle cop gave us a dirty look, presumably for following the officers too closely.

The other drivers around us all had looks of shock or intense amusement as we followed the scene down the freeway. We continued driving up the 5, all the way up to the 14, where the Town Car decided to change freeways and head toward Lancaster. We gave up following at this point, after about 25 miles.
