State of the Groundhog

Groundhog Day vs. State of the Union Speech

The fact that Groundhog Day and the State of the Union Speech both fall on Feb. 2 represents an ironic juxtaposition: One involves a meaningless ritual in which we look to a creature of little intelligence for prognostication; the other involves a groundhog.

In other news, thanks to Sarai finding the cheapest airfair ever, we’re going to NYC to see Rob and Sarah for a few days toward the end of the month. You can’t beat $270 round trip for two people. We skipped buying each other Xmas gifts this year in favor of using that money to take a weekend trip somewhere around here, but this will actually be cheaper than spending a weekend in Monterey or somewhere (well, we did discuss Las Vegas as well).

Works for me. We were talking about flying to LV on a Friday evening and coming home Sunday, so I don’t have to miss any work. I only get one week (!) of vacation time my first year at this job, so I’m trying not to use it all up on single days off here and there. I only have to take one vacation day when we go see you guys; the other is a comp day for some work I’m doing this Sunday.

I had four weeks vacation per year at Earthlink so I’m still trying to get used to not being able to take time off pretty much whenever I want. It sucks.
