LA weekend in review

Back home after our extended weekend in LA.

We arrived at Sarai’s parents’ house around 10:00 Friday evening and made it to Release the Bats by 11:30. Bats was a good time, as always, except for the band, which I couldn’t actually identify as live music, as they seemed to by lip-syncing along with a CD for a good part of their performance.

Saturday’s Tiki Ti plans were foiled by a forgotten ID, but Jennifer, Eric, Sarai, and I made do at a nearby coffee shop. Company is more important than atmosphere, so with good company it doesn’t really matter where you are. The bar was really noisy and crowded anyway. We did more talking in an hour at the coffee shop than we could have done all evening at the bar.

The rest of the weekend was spent in Long Beach used book shopping (The Salmon of Doubt by Douglas Adams, Hackers by Steven Levy, and Crackpot by John Waters; book list updated), walking on the beach, having blended coffee drinks at Portfolio, and eating veggie burgers. We left around 10:30 this morning and, remarkably, didn’t see too much traffic getting home.

Once we got unpacked and cleaned up and stuff I made a drink from our tropical drink calendar. Midori, cranberry juice, and lemon juice make a “Skinny Dipper”. It came out really sweet, which was a result of me forgetting just how sweet Midori is and doubling the amount in the recipe. We drank a little, then poured it back into the shaker with some vodka to cut it some, and now it’s much better. In some bartending book or other I learned that adding vodka to a Fuzzy Navel (peach schnapps and orange juice) makes it a Hairy Navel. So this new drink we’re having be could be called a Hairy Skinny Dipper. Yuck.

I can’t believe we’re only going to be here five days until we leave for Las Vegas next Saturday. I wish I could work just three or four days every week and have every weekend be as nice as these. Work is for suckers.
