Some notes on the .XXX Top Level Domain
Joi Ito, who is, among other things, a member of the
ICANN board, posts about their approval of the .XXX top-level domain proposal. He explains a little bit about the proposal but fails to address my main concerns:
- That it’s a money grab by the people who will be profiting from the (overpriced) .xxx domain registrations,
- That it doesn’t actually benefit adult webmasters in any way, and
- That the domain name system isn’t meant to describe web site content (but they threw this concept out the window a long time ago)
He does touch on the censorship/control issue, but only to say that this wasn’t their intention. He doesn’t mention how much easier it will be to push for legislation when there’s already a porn ghetto to force people into. I predict we’ll see new content laws proposed within a year (they’ll never pass, but that isn’t really the point).
I respect Joi but I’ve got to disagree with this one.
