Vegas, Baby

Leaving for Fabulous Las Vegas in about an hour.

The only thing set on the agenda for today was a visit to Shark Reef, the aquarium at Mandalay Bay, where they had the only hammerhead shark in captivity in the US, and one of the only two in the world. I wanted to go when we were there this time last year but we didn’t get a chance to. Now, just as I was looking for a URL to link to, I discover that the hammerhead died in December. Poor little girl (well, at six feet she was little for a hammerhead shark anyway). That’s really disappointing. I’ve always been fascinated by these sharks and would love to see one in person.

I’ve been to Shark Reef before, a few years ago, and it was only the hammerhead that was going to bring me back there now. The aquarium itself is decent, but at $16 it’s a little expensive, so I’m not in any hurry to go back without some major attraction like that.

With that crossed off the agenda, I don’t think we have any plans for today. We’re meeting up with Rob and Sarah tomorrow, after they get in from Exotic World. Either today or tomorrow we’ll have to go to Venus/Taboo Cove which, as far as I can tell, is the only tiki bar in Las Vegas (???). We’ve been there once before, but it was at like 5:00 when it just opened. The bar was empty except for a couple drunk girls at the bar and the back room wasn’t open yet, so I want to check it out again later in the evening when we can see the whole place. Aside from that, we’ll be doing the usual: Red Square, Quarks, Double Down. I’d like to make an effort to find some new places too. There’s no shortage of good bars in Vegas, so it seems like kind of a waste to keep going to the same places every time.

Poor shark. I guess they don’t do well in captivity?

You know you can pet sharks for free on Fridays from 6-9 in LBC. Something to think about if you’re ever in town around then. They’re not hammerheads though. But still, they act like cats, it’s rad.

I’d imagine not. I don’t know why there are so few (only one now!) in captivity.

Is the Long Beach aquarium petting pool outside the aquarium proper? I’ve been there once, a few years ago, and thought it was inside (outdoors, but within the paid admission area). How do you get to the pool without going through the aquarium?
