Yahoo the new Google?

Yahoo is a company I love to hate, but I have to admit they’ve been doing some pretty neat stuff lately. Most recently is their Mindset search tool that lets you specify whether you want commercial or non-commercial results for any given search. A slider above your search results will re-display the results in real time as you adjust it. I’ve been wanting something like this for Google for a long time. I usually have to make do with “-buy -shop -store -order -purchase -cart”, etc, in my searches. Their Creative Commons search, announced a few months ago, is another example of something interesting coming out of there. This is a good sign, as Yahoo has been stagnating for years.

Now if only they would do something about their god-awful Yahoo Messenger, which seriously has one of the worst UIs I’ve ever used (and that’s saying a lot). We have to use it at work and I am constantly amazed at the stupidity of it. One of these days I’m going to set up a Jabber server here and be done with it.

I just use Adium. I can’t stand the idea of having multiple IM clients running simultaneously anyway.

I’d love to try it but I’m stuck on Windows XP at work until I can talk my boss into buying me a Mac Mini (I’m working on him).

I’m actually already working on a Jabber server here but I’m having trouble getting SSL to work, so we’re not using it yet. One of these days I’m going to find the time to figure it out.
