Holiday preparedness

I’m usually pretty good about getting ready early for holidays and trips, but this year it’s really snuck up and blindsided me. This is probably due, at least in part, to the fact that we’ve got a lot going on in a short span of time, starting tomorrow when we drive down to Sarai’s parent’s house for Xmas/Hanukkah and ending mid-January when we come back from vacation.

Because we’re driving to LA tomorrow, today is really my last day pre-holiday. As of this morning I’ve got my Xmas gifts purchased, but I haven’t yet begun to wrap them. Sarai and I will be exchanging gifts tonight or tomorrow morning and I haven’t even wrapped hers yet.

We’ll be in LA until Monday, and then I have a 3 1/2 day weekend for New Year’s, from mid-day Friday through Monday the 2nd, but no idea what I’m going to do with it.

On January 4th we fly to NYC for Rob and Sarah’s wedding, which takes place on the 6th. On the afternoon of 7th we fly to Europe for a week: First to Budapest for two days, then Vienna for another two, and finally to Prague for three days. This is a painfully short stay in each of these cities; I’d prefer three or four days in each of the first two and at least a week in Prague, not to mention a few extra days in NYC, but finances and work only allow for this much. I’m using all my vacation time for the next ten months in one shot as it is, which means I don’t know how I’m going to manage the trip we’re taking after Sarai graduates in May. But it will be worth it, I’ll figure out something when the time comes.

Sarai’s brother David is house-sitting and watching the cats for us while we’re gone. Yesterday I prepared for this by finally getting the renters insurance I’ve been putting off buying for the past few years. Now if only I could do something about the cats’ state of mind. They already don’t like strangers and will absolutely hate being left alone with one for two weeks. Poor babies. We haven’t told them yet; I’ve been spelling out v-a-c-a-t-i-o-n when we talk about it around the house.

I hope you have an excellent vacation/break. That’s simply amazing to have nearly a month to travel and celebrate.

The cats will be furious for sure. ;)

Thanks, we’re really looking forward to it. We could both really use it, I think.

As for the cats, you don’t know the half of it. Their usual reaction to strangers is to hide in the bed under the blankets. Strange creatures, these cats.
