Ace Hotel, Portland

Sarai and I were talking with Stacy and Gary recently and the subject of Portland came up. They had never been there so after we told them what we liked about the city we decided that we should all take a trip up there together. We flew up Friday morning and came home Sunday evening. Our trip happened to coincide with the downturn in the weather in the area, allowing us to enjoy temperatures in the 40s during the day and 30s at night, lots of rain, and even a little snow. This is in stark contrast to our last trip up there which fell right in the middle of a heat wave.

Ace Hotel, Portland

This trip we stayed at the Ace Hotel, a boutique hotel downtown. We discovered the Ace on our last trip, when we stayed at the Mark Spencer Hotel just across the street. Walking past the Ace, we looked in and said “Wow, we’re staying here next time!” Jojo has since stayed there and reported that it is as nice as it looks and so we had no trouble deciding on a hotel for this trip.

Some of the hotel’s amenities include a Stumptown coffee annex, free wifi, a common area with MacBooks available for use by the guests and Leonard Cohen lyrics stenciled on the wall, a photobooth in the lobby, and a sense of humor. They’ve also got a large event space in the building but there was nothing going on there while we were in town, so we couldn’t check it out.

Thanks for sleeping with us

The rooms are a little spartan and the windows a bit drafty, but the overall experience was great. The staff are friendly and helpful and the entire place just had a really great, mellow vibe. Much like Portland itself. This is the second Ace location, with the first in Seattle. We’ll never have trouble finding a hotel in these two cities again.
