New digital SLR

Canon Rebel XTi

One of my new year’s resolutions last year was to buy a digital SLR and learn to use it. I missed it by one day — We ordered a Canon Rebel XTi on January first.

I actually missed by more than a single day because it didn’t arrive until the day before yesterday, and I’m still working on learning how to use it. This is only the second SLR I’ve owned, the first being an old Pentax something-or-other I had for my photography classes in high school. I knew a little about using an SLR back then but have since forgotten almost all of it, so I’m starting from scratch here.

Canon is rumored to have a new entry-level SLR coming out this month, so we were able to pick up this model cheap on Amazon after the holidays. We’ve had our eye on it for a while, along with a nice lens (EF-S 17-85mm F4-F5.6 IS USM), but when we realized we could get the camera body with a basic lens for $600 we jumped on it. There will be plenty of time for nicer lenses later, once we figure out what we’re doing.

Keep an eye on my Flickr photostream for lots of cat pictures as I practice using it around the house.
